Tacos

Where to Eat

Tacos originate in Mexico, where the folded or rolled corn tortilla has been a staple since pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica; the modern taco al pastor style traces to Lebanese immigrants who brought spit-roasted shawarma techniques to central Mexico in the 20th century. A classic taco fills a warm corn tortilla with seasoned meat, onion, cilantro, and salsa; a Greek-twist version swaps in gyro-spiced pork or chicken, crumbled feta in place of cotija cheese, and a lemon-oregano tzatziki drizzled on top instead of standard crema. In Athens, tacos can be eaten at Poncho Tacos (Themistokleous 63, near Syntagma) and Mamacita Taqueria y Cocteleria (Apollonos 9B, Plaka), both of which serve handmade-tortilla tacos.
